The 501 SS Super Sport was produced in almost unchanged form from 1931 to 1934. It was the first series model designed by the new NSU chief designer Walter William Moore. Moore was recruited in 1929 from Norton in England where he had designed the upright-shaft engines that were employed so successfully in motorsports. Typical features are the standing 500cc OHC 1-cylinder engine with upright shaft, 3-speed gearbox with pedal gearshift, dual exhaust (cf. single-port system on racing SS models) and closed frame.
