The outstanding qualities of the SL125, one of Honda's earliest trail bikes, were confined to the engine, which was quiet, powerful and extremely reliable. Handling, helped by the bike's light weight, was fair — certainly not outstanding. Later, with the XL series, the makers improved the ride by fitting better-quality forks and rear-suspension units; for the engine the main change was a detachable rocker box in place of the original integral design.
Silencing was extremely efficient, the exhaust being inaudible at 30ft.
