When it appeared in 1987, the Transalp was the latest in a line of fashionable 'dual sport' bikes from the big motorcycle manufacturers. Combining the best aspects of off-road machinery with a well-mannered road bike, they typically offer a softly tuned middleweight engine combined with trail-styled wheels and tyres and soft, long-travel suspension.

The Transalp's engine has three-valve heads and liquid-cooling, and is tuned for flexibility rather than outright power. The soft suspension is unadjustable, and despite offering good comfort over rough surfaces, it is quickly overwhelmed by sporty riding. The Transalp's smart Euro-styling is distinctive, the small fairing and twin chromed silencers giving a compact, purposeful look.
