This first o.h.v. 750 from BMW in 1928 was effectively a development of the 500cc R57, and its oversquare, 83 x 68mm engine provided an exhilarating performance by the standards of its day. The valve gear was completely enclosed, and although the three-speed gearbox and the cycle parts were similar to those introduced on the R32 five years earlier, everything was stronger. The front brake was bigger and the rear brake was now a heel-operated device contracting around a drum at the front end of the driveshaft.
