The sportiest Multistrada ever: Ducati unveils the new V4 Pikes Peak

The new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, featuring a new MotoGP-inspired livery, is the sportiest Multistrada ever

Precise, intuitive, effective yet powerful: the V4 Pikes Peak is powered by the 170hp V4 Granturismo engine and is ready and willing to rule all mountains

The Multistrada Pikes Peak is the model that has represented the essence of sportiness in the Borgo Panigale dual bike family since its introduction to the range.
With the presentation of the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, Ducati raises the bar even higher, offering fans around the world a bike that is not only the sportiest Multistrada ever, but also the most powerful model in the entire crossover segment.

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak takes life around the excellent Multistrada V4 platform: where performance, smoothness of operation and reliability offered by the V4 Granturismo engine, together with the contained weight, the ease of handling, the comfort for rider and passenger alike, state-of-the-art equipment and electronics are part of the cornerstones of the Multistrada V4 family. Starting from these solid foundations, the new V4 Pikes Peak was developed by introducing significant changes in terms of chassis set-up, premium ergonomics, electronic controls as well as numerous dedicated components, which give the bike a distinctly sportier attitude compared to the Multistrada V4. Ducati, once again, promises to delight a wide range of riders looking for the purest performance within the dual bikes universe.

The design work behind this new project develops starting from the peculiar elements of the Multistrada V4 family, integrating them with the two elements that mainly identify this Pikes Peak version from an aesthetic and functional perspective, namely the 17 ” front wheel and the single-sided swingarm. The racing soul of the bike is intensified by the dedicated “Pikes Peak” livery, faithfully inspired both in colours and graphics by that of the Desmosedici GP ’21; even the number plates on both sides of the fuel tank contribute to highlight the deep link with the world of competitions.

With the aim to further emphasise its sporty-oriented attitude the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak comes with a wide range of components made of carbon fibre in addition to the Akrapovič titanium and carbon silencer (road-approved). Others distinctive aesthetic elements are the low smoked plexi, Öhlins front fork anodised gold legs and two-tone Black and Red rear saddle embellished with the V4 logo and the Ducati Corse badge applied to the “beak”.

The chassis compartment of the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is part of the revolution. With the respect to the Multistrada V4, it has in fact been significantly revised. First and foremost, it has been developed around the 17” front wheel, which ensures the rider great precision and responsiveness. The new machine is fitted with sports road tyres (sizes: 120/70 front; 190/55-17 rear) and mounts Marchesini forged aluminum rims, 2.7 kg lighter than those of the Multistrada V4 S, which make the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle therefore more effective and contribute to the reduction of the total weight amount of 4 kg compared to the Multistrada V4 S. Additionally, Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspension also guarantees brilliant performance in sports riding, through the use of an “event based” mode, the same adopted by the Panigale V4 S and the Streetfighter V4 S, which automatically adjusts the setting according to the user’s riding style.

The aluminum monocoque frame has been refreshed with the precise objective of achieving a different inclination of the steering head (25.75° compared to the 24.5° of the Multistrada V4), not to mention that trail and wheelbase geometry have been recalibrated according to the different uses of the motorcycle.

The braking system of the new V4 Pikes Peak is at the top of the segment and derives directly from that of the Panigale V4. At the front, the system includes 330 mm diameter discs and Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers, like the Multistrada V4 S, to which are added the pads of the Panigale V4. At the rear, the system features a single 265 mm diameter disc with a Brembo floating caliper.

The new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak stands out even for its dedicated ergonomics, specifically designed to ensure maximum control and optimise lean angles. With respect to the Multistrada V4 the riding position has been completely refreshed: the footpegs, for example, are higher and moved back to increase the maximum lean angle, while the handlebar is lower, narrower and has contained curved bars. The rider benefits of an even better feeling in sporty riding while maintaining an excellent level of comfort.

The new Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is powered by the most powerful engine within the category, the admired V4 Granturismo, achieving 170 hp with a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 8,750 rpm. This engine, specifically designed by Ducati for the Multistrada V4 family, results extremely lightweight - 66.7 kg only - and compact. Thanks to these features Ducati engineers create an uncompromised equilibrium with perfect mass centralization. With a displacement of 1160 cc, the V4 Granturismo engine ensures top-of-the-segment power and torque levels. In addition, the V4 Granturismo represents also a reference in terms of versatility and reliability, featuring a record-breaking maintenance intervals, with valve play checks scheduled every 60,000 km.

The V4 Granturismo engine has been optimised to intensify the characteristics of the bike and features some innovations. Among these, the introduction of the Race Riding Mode, which represents a first for Multistrada models. The Race option is added to a more racing strategy for the limiter, which intervenes more gradually than in the Multistrada V4, in order to alert the biker in advance and allow him a more effective sporty drive in terms of gear changes within the high area of the rev counter. The quickshifter also has a dedicated strategy that allows extremely aggressive downshifts, as well as the implementation of an even more direct throttle response in High Power Mode.

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak inherits the latest generation and sophisticated electronic package of the Multistrada V4 S, which includes, among others, the as-standard radar technology both at the front and at the rear, which offers Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) functionality.
The 6.5” TFT dashboard, also available as standard on the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, allows the user to view the map navigator thanks to the advanced Ducati Connect system, which allows to mirror the rider’s smartphone.

Electronics innovations are, also in this case, aimed at obtaining a better sporty driving experience. In addition to the introduction of the Race Riding Mode, Ducati Wheelie Control on the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak has an updated strategy that offers an even better response and a more accurate control during dynamic riding. ABS Cornering has also been configured to be safe and performing in whatever riding situation, even in the sportiest.

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is a technologically advanced motorcycle, designed for those who love the thrill of sporty riding, especially on mountainous twisties or between the kerbs of a race track.

Design

The design work behind the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is based on the stylistic principles that characterise the Multistrada V4 family and perfectly integrating with two elements that traditionally reflects the Multistrada Pikes Peak version from both aesthetic and functional point of view, precisely the 17” front wheel and the single-sided swingarm.

The Centro Stile Ducati focused its attention to perfectly combine shape and function, with the ultimate goal of providing the rider with ideal ergonomics and thus enhancing the performance attitude of the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak.

The technical and functional elements are thus transformed into design elements. From radars to aerodynamic appendages; from plexi to the dashboard; from the blocks to the handlebar to the compartment for storing and charging the Smartphone: everything has been perfectly integrated into the design of the bike.

The racing mood of the bike is intensified by the dedicated “Pikes Peak” livery, faithfully inspired both in colours and graphics by that of the Desmosedici GP ’21; even the number plates on both sides of the fuel tank contribute to highlight the deep link with the world of competition.

It is clear that the new livery emphasises the lines of the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, by communicating pure sportiness and the unparalleled mix of comfort and performance, protection and riding pleasure at the same time.

With the aim to further underline its sporty-oriented attitude the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak comes with a wide range of components made of carbon fibre in addition to the full-titanium Akrapovič exhaust (road-approved). Others distinctive aesthetic elements are the low smoked plexi, Öhlins front fork anodised gold legs, two-tone black and red rear saddle embellished with the V4 logo and the Ducati Corse badge applied to the “beak”.

Engine

The new Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak adopts the most powerful engine within its category, the admired V4 Granturismo, an extremely lightweight - 66.7 kg only, (1.2 kg less than the twin-cylinder of the Pikes Peak 1260) and compact beating heart. Thanks to these features Ducati engineers create an uncompromised equilibrium with perfect mass centralization. With a displacement of 1158 cc, the V4 Granturismo engine ensures top-of-the-segment power and torque levels. The Euro 5-compliant engine delivers170 hp with a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 8,750 rpm.

The spring-drive valve train, designed and tested over 200,000 km, ensures outstanding performance, not to mention an absolute level of reliability and, above all, record-breaking maintenance intervals for the category, with valve play checks scheduled every 60,000 km.

With the multi-victorious engine in MotoGP, the V4 Granturismo shares in addition to the 90° V layout some exclusive technical solutions. Among these, the counter-rotating crankshaft, which by working “against” the inertia generated by the wheels improves both efficiency and riding pleasure. The “twin pulse” configuration represents another aspect which brings the personality of this V4 engine closer to that of a twin cylinder, improving the quality of delivery.

Among its distinctive features, the engine adopts the deactivation of the rear bank: by “turning off” the
combustion in the rear cylinders rider and passenger can control the thermal comfort in critical area on the hottest days.

The V4 Granturismo engine has been optimised to intensify the characteristics of the bike and features a more racing strategy for the limiter, which intervenes more gradually than in the Multistrada V4, in order to alert the biker in advance and allow him a more effective sporty drive in terms of gear changes within the high area of the rev counter. The quickshifter also has a dedicated strategy that allows extremely aggressive downshifts, as well as the implementation of an even more direct throttle response in High Power Mode.

Furthermore, Ducati Performance catalogue features a special range of track-only accessories, such as the complete Akrapovič exhaust along with the dry clutch kit.

Ergonomics

More comfortable than a sports bike and sportier than a crossover. Introducing the new Multistrada Pikes Peak with premium ergonomics specifically designed to ensure maximum control and optimise lean angles.

With respect to the Multistrada V4 the riding position has been completely refreshed: the footpegs, for example, are higher and moved back to increase the maximum lean angle, while the handlebar is lower, narrower and has contained curved bars. The result? The rider benefits of an even better feeling in sporty riding while maintaining an excellent level of comfort.

In line with the Pikes Peak’s tradition, the new Multistrada also adopts a lowered plexi that enhances its
sportiness without sacrificing the protection of the rider and passenger alike who, as on any self-respecting sport touring, can tackle even longer journeys.

Chassis

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak chassis set-up shares the successful layout adopted by the Multistrada V4 however enriched with a sportier appeal and dedicated to a more dynamic on-asphalt riding, also thanks to some significant technical interventions.

First and foremost the adoption of a pair of 17” Marchesini wheels, a crucial choice not only for the diameter but also because the rims are made by forging aluminum. This means, a considerable weight saving on the unsprung masses and guaranteeing extraordinary operations speed with the respect to the previous Multistrada Pikes Peak versions.

Much of the 4 kg saved by the Pikes Peak compared to the Multistrada V4 S are precisely in the rims (-2,7 kg), an aspect that undoubtedly influences dynamic behaviour of the bike. Equipped with the new Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV (120/70-17 front 190/55-17 rear), to support the sportiness of the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, confirms its pure-performance-oriented character.

On a bike like the Pikes Peak, that makes performance and rewarding in on-road riding its cornerstone, every single element concerning the chassis compartment must be at its finest. That’s why geometry figures have been revised compared to those of the Multistrada, specifically the 25.75° steering angle (+ 1.25° vs Multistrada V4), not to mention that trail is now 120 mm (+0.5 mm vs Multistrada V4) and wheelbase geometry is 1,595 mm (+0,028 mm vs Multistrada V4). These new figures give the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak the driving characteristics typical of sports bikes, without compromising comfort in every situation.

A distinctive element of the chassis from an aesthetic and functional point of view, that says a lot about the “returns to the origins” of this Multistrada, is represented by the new rear single-sided swingarm.
The V4 Pikes Peak is the first Multistrada ever to be equipped with electronic Öhlins suspension. The Smart EC 2.0 system is the same adopted by both Panigale V4 S and Streetfighter V4 S. It is a particularly advanced system that allows an “event based” adjustment. Unlike the Ducati Skyhook Suspension system adopted by the Multistrada V4, which adapts according to the asphalt unevenness in order to ensures optimal vehicle balance, the “event based” system adjusts the suspensions according to the rider’s driving style. In other words, the more the rider pushes to the limit the suspensions get stiffer.

Each Riding Mode is carefully combined with a dedicated suspension operation strategy, which allows the system to autonomously choose the ideal set-up for a specific riding condition. The user can also manually change the default set-up directly through the dashboard with an extremely intuitive interface.
Öhlins suspension guarantees 170 mm wheels travel, a specific features which ensures that the V4 Pikes Peak is a true Multistrada, combining comfort and great capacity to absorb the imperfection of the road on the one hand and the sportiness that every Pikes Peak must have on the other.

The braking system of the new V4 Pikes Peak is at the top of the segment and derives directly from that of the Panigale V4. At the front, the system includes 330 mm diameter discs and Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers, like the Multistrada V4 S, to which are added the pads of the Panigale V4 with the aim of ensuring the typical decelerations of a racing bike. At the rear, the system features a single 265 mm diameter disc with a Brembo floating caliper.

Electronics

In 2010, the Ducati Multistrada was the world’s first motorcycle equipped with Riding Mode: the technology that allows the rider to change the character of the bike counting on a simple button. Since then, all Multistrada models have had the same 4 Riding Modes, namely Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro. With the V4 Pikes Peak Ducati introduces, as a first on a Multistrada model, a specifically Riding Mode developed for sportier riding, the Race Riding Mode, which in this version replaces the Enduro option.

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is also equipped with a 6.5” TFT dashboard, which can be set to 6 different languages. Greatly admired for its optimal resolution and perfect visibility in whatever light condition, thanks also to the possibility of changing its inclination by means of a dedicated knob.
All information is immediately readable, starting with the circular tachometer with digital hand completed by the gear indicator. Thanks to the wide display, all service information is always available while riding, such as fuel level, range, coolant temperature. Dedicated boxes are reserved for electronic controls as well as for the set-up chosen by the rider for the Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspension.

The Ducati Connect system allows the phone’s “mirroring” function to quickly check the phone book, answer incoming calls and listen to some music. The Sygic GPS navigation app gives the opportunity to view the navigator map, “projected” directly on the display together with all the information that helps the rider through the set itinerary.

Every step results intuitive thanks to the backlit blocks by means of a joystick that allows the rider to browse through the various menus.

Riding Modes can be selected thanks to the new “Mode” button while the management of the Adaptive Cruise Control is entrusted to the classic dedicated button to which the + and - buttons are added. These are used to increase or decrease the distance the rider wants to keep from the vehicle ahead.

Furthermore, the suspension setting is managed by the dedicated button, recognizable by a stylised shock absorber, and the selected mode is then displayed under that of the selected Riding Mode.
Sportiness and handling are harmoniously combined in the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak thanks to many solutions that improve on-board life. Among these, the compartment on the fuel tank equipped with a USB port, which allows to always keep the smartphone under control and recharge it. What’s more, the right side of the dashboard features a further 12V power socket.

Race Riding Mode

Introducing the Riding Mode Race, undoubtedly the sportiest ever adopted by a Multistrada. Thanks to this unique gem, the Multistrada Pikes Peak offers the maximum engine and chassis performance, allowing to fully enjoy the 170 HP of the V4 Granturismo engine and the excellence of the Öhlins Smart EC 2.0. Furthermore, the system exploits an even more direct throttle response in High Power Mode. Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Wheelie Control operations are reduced to a minimum and the ABS is set to level 2, also allowing controlled lifting of the rear wheel and therefore getting the most out of the braking phase, even on the racetrack. The Race Riding Mode is undoubtedly the ideal choice for experienced riders who wish to exploit all the exclusive performance the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak can offer.

Sport Riding Mode

The best on road performing Sport Riding Mode provides a thrilling 170 HP together with a sporty suspension set-up. Sport Mode is also characterised by low levels of Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Wheelie Control compared to the Race RM. Furthermore, the ABS is set to level 2, allowing the ABS is set to level 2 allowing controlled lifting of the rear wheel in order to maximize braking performance.

Touring Riding Mode

In Touring Riding Mode Ducati provides the V4 Granturismo engine’s f ull 1 70 H P with a s moother, l ess d irect throttle response. Active safety is enhanced by higher DTC and DWC sensitivity levels. The ABS is set to level 3, perfect for touring; this turns rear-wheel lift detection and Cornering ABS functionality on, while also optimising the front/rear combined braking effect.

Urban Riding Mode

In Urban Riding Mode power output is reduced to a maximum of 115 HP, and suspension is set for optimum agility in case of frequent urban obstacles with corresponding DSS mapping. DTC and DWC are set to high levels for maximum security. ABS is set to level 3.

Ducati Traction Control (DTC)

A key element of the Ducati Safety Pack, DTC equipping the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is a system constantly updated and now integrates data coming from the IMU platform, to efficiently keep under control grip losses and the lean angle. In just a few thousandths of a second with data coming from the sensors, DTC can detect and control rear wheelspin, boosting performance and active safety significantly. The system allows the user to choose between eight different levels. Each one has been programmed to provide a rear wheelspin tolerance that matches progressive levels of riding ability (classified from 1 to 8).

Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC)

Ducati Wheelie Control has been developed and set to the characteristics of the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, to be even more accurate in the impulsive maneuvers common in sporty riding. This system, integrated smoothly with the Ducati Riding Modes, offers 8 setting levels. It analyses the attitude of the bike; it detects any front wheel lift and controls torque and power to maximise acceleration in safety.

Bosch-Brembo braking system with ABS Cornering

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak exploits the Bosch 10.3ME Cornering ABS with corners function, properly calibrated to enhance the features of the bike.

Adjustable on 3 levels each of which is combined as standard with the different Riding Modes, and is a significant element of the Ducati Safety Pack. Thanks to its ABS control processor, the Multistrada Pikes Peak makes use of a combined braking system (Electronic Combined Braking System) that is optimised at level 3 for the Urban and Touring RM.

In Sport and Race modes the ABS is set to level 2. The rider can still further raise the level of sportiness by activating level 1 from the menu, in this case the ABS function (non cornering) is active only on the front axle, and deactivated on the rear wheel, allowing the rear to drift under braking in sportier driving.

Technology

The Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak inherited for the Multistrada V4 the same radar technology. Radars are advanced aid systems capable of supporting and making riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the motorcycle. This technical solution manages two functions: Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection. It should be underlined that adaptive intelligent systems are an aid to the vehicle rider’s riding and must always be kept under control or adjusted by the rider. Advanced systems are not autonomous riding systems and therefore do not replace the rider. Always attentive to safety on the road and on the racetrack, Ducati emphasizes that the rider is and remains responsible for riding and must always maintain a prudent behaviour appropriate to the various environmental situations.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Front radar, perfectly integrated into the Multistrada Pikes Peak, controls the operation of the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which by means of controlled braking and acceleration automatically adjusts the distance (selectable on four levels) from other vehicles when riding at a speed between 30 and 160 km/h. This car-derived system has been evolved and developed according to the dynamics and ergonomics of a two-wheeled vehicle. In particular, the authority of the system in terms of deceleration and acceleration has been limited to ensure the rider can maintain constant control of the vehicle in any situation. The ACC can be inserted and adjusted using the dedicated buttons located on the left block. Thanks to the DQS Up & Down, the rider can shift up or down without the ACC deactivating during the acceleration and deceleration phases. ACC system allows for more comfortable riding, especially on long motorway journeys.

Blind Spot Detection

Rear radar technology, housed under the headlight, can detect and report vehicles approaching in the so-called blind spot, namely the area not visible either directly by the rider or through the rear-view mirror. The BSD (Blind Spot Detection) system monitors this situation thanks to the LEDs positioned on the rear-view mirrors. The BSD system also signals the approaching from behind of vehicles at high speed. In both cases, if the user activates the direction indicator expressing the intention to change lane, the BSD flashes the LED signalling a potentially dangerous condition. Thanks to the dedicated menu, the user can adjust the brightness of the system on three different levels.

Vehicle Hold Control (VHC)

The latest generation Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) system provides riders with easier restarts, even in critical situations like on a gradient; this is because it modulates brake pressure during starts, leaving the user free to focus on throttle and clutch control.

Hands Free ignition

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak uses a Hands-Free starting system that guarantees the best safety standards. Thanks to this system the rider can easily keep the key in his pocket and start the engine with the dedicated button positioned immediately behind the steering plate.

Headlight and indicators

Needless to say, The Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is equipped as standard with full LED lights and a front headlight with DRL and Cornering Lights. The rear light integrates the Ducati Brake Light function, which in the event of sudden braking automatically activates the flashing of the light in order to appropriately signal the condition of sudden slowdown. The direction indicators, also LED, turn off automatically after use thanks to the auto shut-off system.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), available as an accessory for the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, allows a constant monitored pressure of both tyres.
