The BMW R 23 is a motorcycle, which appeared in 1938. It was the successor to the R 20 . As from 1938, also for motorcycles to 200 cc, a control and driver's license was required, but a new license category was introduced to 250 cc, BMW took the opportunity of increasing engine displacement to 250 cc.

The high degree of technical compliance of the R20 and R23 models offered by BMW even a conversion kit for the displacement to 250 cc for R 20.

The powertrain, chassis, brakes, front fork and ignition system are identical to the model R 20 Only the alternator for the vehicle's voltage system now delivers 6V/75W. The R 23 is the original version since then, all 250 single-cylinder BMW motorcycle with shaft drive, which were built until 1966, designed as a high quality, low maintenance and economical everyday cars.
