Harley Davidson XLCH 1000 Sportster
When Harley Davidson designed Ihe XL series of motorcycles {and the K series that preceded it) in the 1950s, engineering had given the new middleweight sporting bikes toot shifters on the right side of the engine cases, since there was no standard location lor shifters at thai time. New federal regulations for the U.S. market for 1975 standardized the location of the shifter on the left side of the motorcycle, which meant moving the location of the shifter on XL models. IB* Twms already featured shifters on the left side of the cases.) Because Ihe Motor Company had not completed engineering and tooling in time to introduce a true leftside shifter. 1975-1976 XL models used a long linkage from the right side of the motorcycle to the left to relocate Ihe snifie.
